Livescribe

I saw this product a while ago called livescribe, it bills itself as a "Smart Pen", but I see it as a way to digitize notes.  It links with several programs now, and my handwriting is quite legible so I doubt it would be a problem for me to use this product.  I'm just not sure if I would use it.  I type pretty quickly, and the mouse+keyboard interface is pretty simple to utilize so when I am at a computer I struggle to see a use for it.  As a long time tablet and Microsoft OneNote enthusiast I like having my notes in my handwriting, but appreciate the ability to search them like they are typed.  I just don't know if I would pull the trigger on this though.

This is a couple of years old, but I still wonder about this.  How can some shops classify you as exempt and then give you a script to follow.  If you have freedom to pursue creative solutions then you are probably closer to the exempt status, but if your troubleshooting is largely scripted then you may have grounds to sue for back wages if you work overtime.

DVD Streaming for media center extenders

This started out as post that I thought would be useful for someone (me), but the way that Microsoft and market forces have basically killed the Media Center Extenders off, it may not matter. This registry key is one part of this step. Most of the rest of the information that I found on ripping the DVD to a folder for chapters to remain intact was on The Green button community. This tidbit took me quite a long time to find (so long ago I don't even have a link to attribute it to), but here it is. Hope this helps someone.

Marmalade

Looking for a tasty addition to hearty bread, Marmalade is an easy option.

First use a vegetable peeler to peel off the orange skin leaving the white pith behind. Stack then cut these peels into as narrow a strip as you can.

Peel the white part off of the orange and cut the oranges up into small pieces.

Collect up the white pith and put it into a cheesecloth bag. Put the pith, cut up fruit and rind in a pot and fill until one half of the orange mixture is covered with water and juice. Soak for 12 hours.

Take out the bag of pith, remove large pieces of orange membranes and any extra pith that might have snuck in and add one cup of sugar for each cup of oranges. Cook until mixture thickens. Make sure to stir continuously or this mixture will burn.

Priced out forever

Given all the ink all over the internet about home buying and the risks and rewards of buying is the current market, I've been thinking about my decision to buy a home right at the height of the housing bubble.  I like most people looking to own a home in that time frame that we needed to buy or we would never be able to afford anything.  We where afraid of being priced out forever.  We closed on our home purchase in December of 2008 after looking for about 4 months.  The home had most of what we want and while a little above what we wanted to pay it had come down almost $50k from the original list.  We paid $299k for a 1500 sqft newly constructed townhouse close to where we wanted to live.  In the time since we have bought I have started to regret the decision and started reading the Seattle Bubble blog, Get Rich Slowly, and The Simple Dollar all of which advocated not buying in the time that I was considering buying.  All things considered I like where we live and the people that we live around, but given the houses that my friends have bought since the market has taken a turn I know my money could have gone further.  As it sits the Zestimate for my home is about $70k less than what I paid for it, and even that is likely high (given there are a few short sales in the complex).

In the moment that we where considering buying we where nowhere near ready, mentally or financially; and in a traditional not hyper inflated (and not dangerously/fraudulently loose lending situation) we likely would not have qualified for a loan on our home.  We have been fortunate to not even be considered for layoffs in our positions, and have not had any difficulty maintaining our payment schedule, all the while significantly reducing our consumer debt load.  We overbought, but altered our lifestyle enough to sustain it, and with the advice of Get Rich Slowly have gone from nearly $50k in unsecured consumer debt to about $11k and worked steadily to pay our mortgage more quickly with the equity accelerator.  If you find yourself in debt, look at the Get Rich Slowly blog, work that system.  The first step to correcting a problem is to acknowledge you have one, and change your lifestyle accordingly.

Document your Shilling

Gizmodo recently blogged about amazon MP3 store and ditching iTunes.  The article itself made me smile because I dislike iTunes and Apple in general, but I was very disappointed to see that they chose to link to amazon using their associate code, and it had a broken link.  Nice fail on embedding your Affiliate account in the Selling 1500 albums link.  You should disclose that you are an amazon affiliate as failure to do so runs afoul of the FTC word of mouth advertising staff opinion.  Failure to do so actually open up Amazon for FTC action, and your company as well.

Also its generally considered to be good manners to let people know you are shilling.
