Sight

This is getting posted around a fair deal, but not a lot of commentary on the content and the implications for the future.  I really hope you watch it, because I'm about to spoil it.

Any how the protagonist is a fairly average appearing person living deeply embedded in an augmented reality life.  He doesn't seem particularly interesting in some ways, but there are hints at more sinister elements to come.  It goes from creepy to rapey at the end, and really gets to the heart of how will we know reality from fiction in the future when we are all fully augmented?  I think that this thought was what made the first Matrix so compelling, we where down the rabbit hole with Neo as he discovers that all the life he thought he had lived was not real.  The discovery that Plato's suggestion that what we where seeing was just shadows on the cave, was jarring and starling as a viewer but still in a sci-fi not really ever going to happen kind of way.  This provides a much more real, and terrifying example of the near future.  This is more akin to some of my favorite anime Ghost in the Shell, and dealing with the terrifying possibility of our prosthetics being used against our will.

Projects like Google Glass, have real and useful applications outside of the douchbaggy ukulele sunset serenade that Google envisioned, with their product concept video.  The Project glass is just an overlay, and added bonus to your actual eyes, if you extrapolate out and embedded that system into your eyes, literally usurping your native vision what are the implications of that level of access straight to your brain?  You don't know, and this is one terrifying version of what it may be like.  This short is a visual 1984 of how perpetual, embedded augmented reality could be abused.

Sounds a lot like a hit piece funded by M$

Symantec has an article being highlighted by Redmondmag about android malware infections.  Here's the thing I skeptical taking info from a security company that isn't even sure what happened when they got hacked.  I'm disinclined to believe they have the vaguest of clues about a platform they only just started supporting, and particularly suspicious of the Redmond magazine (a blog and magazine that focuses on Microsoft) publishing this info.  Linux vis-a-vie android isn't windows Symantec, and your old bed buddy buying a negative study on a competitive product is not a new idea.

You kind of knew it had to be true

So I'm about to spoil a great movie for you and I have to apologize for that.  It's not that I want to, but the video shows Raiders of the Lost Ark is a shot for shot recreation of another movie.  I had to stop in disgust after about 5 minutes.

Damn you Indy!!!!

Indoor Ikea farming

After the gardening post yesterday I thought about ways to pull off indoor farming.  I don't know that this will work for my space so consider it concept art for the moment, but here you go.  I found this on Ikea hacker the other day and Loyal reader A Beer for the Shower might appreciate this as an upgrade to his "drug dealer style" garden.  As a plus side it also has an aquaculture feature for some slow delivery of fish.  What is the maturation rate on fish any way?  Don't most species take a few years to yield anything useful in terms of Biomass?

So for the people that have read deep into the archives of this old ass blog, or just noticed the tag feature know that I've written about this type of thing before.  This particular post happens to be somewhat practical in the sense that it was designed around objects that exist in the real world and implements principles that are actually on display at Disney World.  It is in a boring section of Epcot, and clearly a sign that the hippies where accidentally allowed into the workforce some how evading the extensive counter-counter culture hippy genocide that must have happened to explain the 80's.  I'm surprise I haven't seen more literature on what must have been quite the feat of quiet genocide here in the US for all of the chanting hippies to have disappeared almost overnight near the end of the 70's.  My current theory is the CIA created a huge (like 1 million gallons or so) batch of tainted lsd and Quaaludes and some how distributed it across the country all on the same week or so miraculously killing all of the hippies.

I kid of course, but seriously think about. ;)
