Ha. I enjoy that. We do a lot of conversation on current legislation, proposed or in effect, in my Government class.
We're citizens no matter where we are now, but once upon a time, slaves were considered commerce and therefore not considered humans. Consider Dred Scott, a slave who escaped in the 1800's to a free state and attempted to use the judicial system to fight for his freedom. the courts ruled that his case was invalid because he was not a free man. So they threw it out.
